You're probably wondering when the best time is to get stucco work done on your Los Gatos home, or how to keep it in top shape through our seasons. It's a fair question, and one I get a lot. Our local climate, with those hot, dry summers and sometimes surprisingly wet winters, really does play a role in how stucco performs and when it's smart to tackle a project.
Understanding Los Gatos Weather & Stucco
Stucco is tough, no doubt about it. But like anything, it's got its ideal conditions for application and curing. Here in Los Gatos, we don't usually deal with extreme cold, which is a big plus. Freezing temperatures during application can mess with the curing process, causing cracks or a weaker finish. Luckily, that's rarely an issue for us.
What we do have, though, are those long, dry summers. While great for outdoor living, intense heat can also dry stucco too quickly, especially the top coat. This can lead to hairline cracks if not managed properly. On the flip side, our winters, while generally mild, can bring enough rain to make scheduling tricky.
When to Schedule Your Stucco Project
Based on years of working on homes right here in Los Gatos, from the older builds in downtown to the newer ones up by the Lexington Reservoir, I've found there's a sweet spot for stucco installation.
- Spring (March - May): This is arguably the best time. The temperatures are usually moderate, not too hot, not too cold. We get some nice, consistent weather without the intense summer sun or the heavy winter rains. The stucco has plenty of time to cure properly without being rushed or soaked.
- Early Fall (September - October): Another excellent window. The summer heat has started to back off, and the winter rains haven't really kicked in yet. You get those pleasant, warm days that are perfect for application and curing.
- Summer (June - August): We can definitely do stucco work in the summer, but it requires more careful planning. We often have to take extra precautions to prevent rapid drying, like misting the stucco or working in shaded areas during the hottest parts of the day. It's totally doable, but it's something we're always mindful of.
- Winter (November - February): This is the trickiest time. While we do get dry spells, the risk of rain is much higher. Stucco needs to be protected from heavy rain during its initial curing phase. If a big storm rolls in, it can delay the project significantly or even compromise the finish if it gets wet too soon. We'll always keep a close eye on the forecast, but sometimes it just makes more sense to wait for better weather.
Ultimately, a good contractor like Absolute Stucco will always work with you to find the best time, taking the forecast and your schedule into account. We're not going to start a big job if a week of downpour is predicted.
Protecting Your Stucco Investment Year-Round
Once your stucco is on, you want it to last, right? Here's how you can help it do just that:
- Keep an Eye Out for Cracks: Small hairline cracks are pretty normal over time, especially with our temperature swings. But if you see larger cracks, or cracks that seem to be expanding, don't ignore them. Water can get in there and cause bigger problems down the line, especially in our older Los Gatos homes that might have less robust flashing.
- Check Your Gutters and Downspouts: Make sure they're clean and directing water away from your stucco walls. Overflowing gutters can saturate stucco, leading to staining or even moisture intrusion.
- Trim Landscaping: Keep bushes, trees, and vines from growing directly against your stucco. They can trap moisture, rub against the surface, and even create pathways for pests. Give your stucco some breathing room.
- Regular Cleaning: Stucco can get dirty, especially on the north-facing sides of your house that don't get as much sun. A gentle wash with a garden hose and a soft brush can do wonders. Avoid high-pressure washers, as they can damage the finish. If you've got mildew or algae, a mild bleach solution (diluted, of course) can help, but always test in an inconspicuous spot first.
- Address Water Issues Promptly: If you notice any leaks from windows, doors, or your roof, get them fixed right away. Water is stucco's biggest enemy when it gets behind the finish.
Taking a few proactive steps can save you a lot of headaches and money in the long run. Good stucco, properly installed and maintained, should last you for decades.
